The obtained strains demonstrated increased activities of the corresponding enzymes in comparison with the wild-type strain. During fermentation in a medium containing chemically pure or crude glycerol (which is a waste of biodiesel production), the obtained strains produced 1.5-2.5 times more ethanol compared to the wild-type strain. During the fermentation of crude glycerol, all analyzed strains of K. phaffii, including the wild-type strain, produced more ethanol than during the fermentation of chemically pure glycerol, so K. phaffii is a good platform for creating an effective ethanol producer from crude glycerol.
