The mechanisms of incorporation of magnesium ions into the structure of yttrium-aluminum garnet was determined and the solubility limits of Mg2+ in Mg2+:YAG ceramics was specified. It was found that doping of ceramics with 0-0.06 wt.% MgO leads to a linear increase in the parameter of the crystal lattice of YAG. A further increase in the concentration is accompanied by an abrupt decrease in the lattice parameter due to the formation of secondary phases enriched in magnesium. It was found that the solubility limit of magnesium ions in the structure of garnet is in the range of 0.06-0.10 wt.% MgO. Theoretical calculations and X-ray diffraction data show that Mg2+ ions are incorporated into the YAG structure by replacing the cationic positions of Al3+ with the formation of oxygen vacancies that compensate for the excess electric charge. The combined effect of Si4 + and Mg2 + impurity ions on the structure and properties of YAG ceramics obtained by the reaction sintering method was investigated. It was found that the silicon impurity significantly increases the solubility of Mg2 + ions in ceramics - at least up to 0.12 at.% (Without additional impurities, Mg2+ solubility is ≈0.07 at.%). The optimal composition of the complex impurity was determined, which ensures the obtaining of ceramics of high optical quality and with inhibited grain growth - 0.071 at.% Si4 ++ 0.044 at.% Mg2+. The use of a complex impurity TEOS + MgO allows to increase the operating range of concentrations, which expands the possibilities of controlling diffusion processes in the synthesis of YAG laser ceramics.
