An additional criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of cathodic protection – the ratio of the densities of cathodic protection currents and the diffusion current is proposed and the influence of temperature, pH and oxygen concentration on it was investigated. In the normalized DSTU 4219 range of protective potentials depending on the pH of the environment, the protective effect is achieved at potentials less than the maximum protective and at different values of the ratio: for medium with slightly alkaline pH – under the condition 0.5   2.4; for a medium with a weakly acidic pH – when the condition  1; for alkaline environment – if the value of the ratio is in the range from 56 to 76. A methodology for determining of residual corrosion rate in the laboratory has been developed; a laboratory sample of the installation for determining of the residual corrosion rate has been made. Based on the analysis of normative documents of different countries and research results, the adjustment of the criterion of technically sufficient protective effect, namely, the rate of residual corrosion of the pipeline metal at a protective potential of less than 0.01 mm/year.
