The object of development described in the interim report is a smoke sensor based on a plasmon-polariton photodetector (PPPD). The purpose of this stage is to develop the design and construction of PPPD and its manufacture with optimized parameters. In the course of work numerical modeling of resonant characteristics of PPPD was carried out. It was calculated that in order to excite the surface plasmon-polariton resonance at the wavelength of the maximum resonance intensity for the gold film (~800 nm) for an angle of incidence of 20° the diffraction grating period should be ~1200 nm and its modulation depth 75 nm. The thickness of the gold film in average should be near 45 nm. PPPD based on silicon (Si) using interference photolithography technology with good optoelectrical and electrophysical characteristics was fabricated. Its resonant characteristics are adjusted to obtain the highest sensitivity to smoke particles and combustion products. The following characteristics of PPPD are achieved: maximum polarization sensitivity Ip/Is=2.1:1÷3.4:1, angular half-width of the resonance maximum ∆Θ=5°÷9°, photosensitivity at the resonance maximum Iph = 0.06 ÷0.12 A/W, non ideality factor of I–V characteristic n<3.5, barrier height ϕb >0.4 eV. A method of resonance registration in PPPD has been developed, which uses both photocurrent resonance and reduction of the light reflection coefficient from the PPPD surface. As a result of this approach, the intensity of the resonant curves is increased by 1.8 times while the half-width by 1.33 times less. Useful model patent has been submitted based on these results.
