The experience of creation novel interactive educational programs is described. These programs uncover many aspects of natural sciences and have certain structural variants, each of which vary by their advantages and disadvantages, perform certain goals, and respond to needs of different parts of the society. The study of interests of various categories of visitors of the NMNH NAS of Ukraine revealed three main clusters of audience that have different preferences regarding the format and content of interactive programs. The scientific and museological heritage of famous Ukrainian zoologists V. O. Karavaev and M.M. Szczerbak are analysed. The role of paleontological and zoological collections in research into historical changes of different groups of vertebrates and their habitats is studied, as well as the prospects of use of the results of such research for interpretation of nature during enlightening activities in natural history museums. Based on study results of bird remains from the museum’s collection is was shown that the black grouse and the western capercaillie are indicator species of forest ecosystems of various serial stages of succession. It was established that, in the Late Pleistocene, the area of forest ecosystems increased in three directions: the Carpathians, the Central Russian Upland, and the Crimean Mountains. The study of paleontological samples of freshwater fishes stored in the NMNH NAS of Ukraine allowed distinguishing different regional fish assemblages, to reconstruct their taxonomic structure and the dynamics of evolutional changes within these assemblages. The results obtained are an important evidence base for interpretation of the evolution of freshwater species and can be used for further development of popular science materials and excursions.
