The connection of the sites enriched with chemical elements with sites with hardening structures and pollution by nonmetallic inclusions is established. The kinetics of austenite decay of steels for railway wheels of different chemical composition was studied, taking into account chemical inhomogeneity and influence on mechanical properties (hardness). Experimentally in the laboratory according to the new method determined the range of allowable cooling rates of surface and central sections of the rim of wheels of different chemical composition with accelerated cooling: maximum allowable cooling rates of the skating surface to prevent the formation of quenching structures and high mechanical properties. Critical temperatures and regularities of austenite decay of steels for railway wheels of different chemical composition at continuous cooling in the speed range are established, which provide formation of ferritic-perlite structure of different degree of dispersion without formation of needle structure. The cooling rates along the cross-section of the rim of the railway wheel at a constant flow rate of the cooler according to the current heat treatment technology were determined experimentally.
