The object of research is the urban structure of the Kharkiv agglomeration. The purpose of the work is to develop methods for improving the urban organization of settlements in the context of the concept of sustainable development (on the example of the Kharkiv agglomeration). Research methods - environmental approach, structural analysis of qualitative characteristics of architectural and urban units, compositional analysis, method of scientific interpretation, methods of sampling and systematization of data. Scientific recommendations are formulated and trends in the development of urban space are identified. The importance and methodological principles of solving the problems of improving the urban organization of settlements in the context of their sustainable development are substantiated. Based on research and systematized factors, scientific recommendations for improving the urban organization of settlements in the context of the concept of sustainable development (on the example of the Kharkiv agglomeration). The results of scientific research can be used by public institutions and private firms in Ukraine in the development of solutions for the design and reconstruction of the architectural environment of the city, as well as primary institutions of architectural and construction profile. Based on the results of the research, methodological and educational developments have been developed within the specialty "architecture and urban planning" which are included and implemented in the educational process and practice of architectural design at the Department of Urban Planning.
