Methods: theoretical study of stress-strain state of metal carried out by finite element method; experimental verification of the reliability degree of determining stress-strain state was carried out based on the method of coordinate grids. The aime are increase of mechanical properties, decrease in expenses of metal and energy, quantity of welds at manufacturing of shells of reactors on the basis of use of new operations of forging of step forgings by the special tool. It was found that the work becomes a conical shape with a large hole diameter from the ledge while salient and the ledge are simultaneous deformation at the initial enlarging stage. This fact can be explained a large degree of deformation in the salient than in the ledge. An experiment planning method was used and enlarging samples were made for experimental studies. As a result, regularities of shaping the workpiece during the enlarging were obtained. Thanks to it, the mechanical properties of forging were obtained. Thus, the hardness index in the ledge of the new technology is greater by 4-6 HRb than the base, due to the crushing of the crystalline structure during the stretching of the ledge and the occurrence of greater deformation in the ledge during enlarging by step die. As a result of macrostructural analysis, the forging has a directed structure. It`s fibers are parallel to the axes. The forging obtained by a new way has fibers repeated the profile of the product. The technique and recommendations for calculation the technological process of forging hollow forgings with varying wall thickness. The recommendations for step die designing are developed. Due to the change in the form of forging the cost of manufacturing hollow parts with one-sided salient has decreased by 10-15% under the conditions of production of PrSC «NKMZ».
