The purpose of the research is to create a cohesive conception of the transformation of the social consciousness of the Southern and Eastern Ukrainian population during the period of the transition completion to industrial society in the 1930s up to the modern Russian-Ukrainian war. The methods of the research are “total history” (deep integration of historical analytical tools with practices in psychological, social philosophy, political science and cultural studies); comparative-historical, retrospective, diachronic and synchronous methods, oral history tools, as well as contemporary research technics in the social consciousness studies – historical anthropology, lifeworld theory, semiotics. The transformation of the social consciousness of the inhabitants of Ukraine (the 1930s till 1991) who were under the influence of aggressive Soviet propaganda is analyzed. The role of the mass media as a tool for manipulating the social consciousness of the population of the UkrSSR is described and its effectiveness in propagandistic mobilization campaigns is assessed. Based on the analysis of the essay "Mindset of a Horde" by Yevhen Hutsalo it is shown how the theme of national consciousness effects on author's mass media opinion journalism. The specifics of the author’s use and interpretation of the concepts of "nation", "mentality", "culture" is outlined. The specific aspects of social consciousness transformation, including religious, cultural, and social, in the UkrSSR and USSR under the totalitarian system pressure are described. In particular, the features of the existential choice of the clergy and religious people of Ukraine during the "pacification by hunger" (1932-1933) are clarified.
