Relationships between morphometric parameters of maize kernel and morphological features of the primary root system were revealed. It is experimentally proved that a significant increase in grain length as a result of selection leads to a significant (P <0,05–0,01) increase in the indicators of the main morphological features of the primary root system of maize. Deep differentiation of lines by rates of changes of morphometric indicators in response to growth of grain length is revealed. It is assumed that this may lead to a significant increase in the adaptability and drought resistance of maize in the post-emergence period. Using efficient models of recurrent selection, inbred lines were selected for combinatorial ability on the basis of created "general" types of synthetic populations with a narrow genetic basis for the main heterosis groups. During 2016–2020, 15 maize hybrids: Zhovten', Parus 226 (2016); Muza, Argument MAS, Yunga 260, Shtorm (2017); Atlas, Novela, Apogey, (2018); Fregat 320, Lanzheron 255, Otrada 275 (2019); Pal'mira Pivdnya, Zapovit 320, Elegiya 280 (2020) and 22 parent components were passed to the State Variety Testing. According to the results of approbation of maize hybrids during the reporting five-year period, 13 hybrids were entered into the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine: Palmyra, Lady Pivdnya (2016), Schuna, Atil, Finish 350 (2017), Laguna 216, Parus 226, Zhovten’ 223, Polonez 251 (2019), MAC Argument, Yunga 260; Muza and Shtorm (2020).
