As a result of the research the theoretical and methodological principles of the mission and role of higher education in the history of European civilization and scientific approaches to the directions and content of modernization of higher education in Ukraine are analyzed; highlights the global social missions that universities have carried out during different periods of their evolution in specific historical and social conditions; clarifies the mission and vision of university education in the context of the challenges of modern civilization. The research is based on the previous scientific achievements of the performers, reflected in their publications and approbations in scientific events. The results of the study can be applied in the fields of science, higher education, politics and in the activities of public authorities of Ukraine.
