The Kyiv Agronomic Society (1909–1918) became a striking example of a public initiative. The results of research established that the Kyiv Agronomic Society was the only specialized branch scientific association in tsarist Russia. We were impressed by its quantitative (100–170 members), and most importantly, qualitative content of the best specialists in their field: of the 12 masters of agronomy of the Russian Empire in 1912, 8 were members of the society. Historical and scientific analysis of the organization of branch research on the example of the Kyiv Agronomic Society showed that domestic agricultural science or agronomy (by definition at that time) proved its necessity as an effective lever to increase the productivity of fields and farms in a relatively short period of time thanks to a well-thought-out system of state incentives. The regional principle of construction of agricultural research provided for the scientific support of agricultural production in accordance with the areas that united into zones (regions) depending on the nature of natural, geographical and economic conditions. However, certain shortcomings of such an organization and the challenges of the time prompted the search for a more rational and progressive structure of agricultural research. Further study of the conceptual principles of innovation of coordination centres of agricultural science focused on the study of the Agricultural Scientific Committee of Ukraine (1918–1927) – the forerunner of the modern National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine.
