The relationship between low serum concentrations of 25- (OH) D, the risk of influenza and influenza-like illness, and their severity has been shown. This is due to the fact that vitamin D3 inhibits the expansion of T cells and modulates the expression of cytokines with Th2-shift; prevents the differentiation and proliferation of B-lymphocytes and the secretion of immunoglobulins; leads to the induction of more tolerant cytokines. This change in the priming environment affects the differentiation of Th cells into Th2.
