The purpose of the study: to determine the state of the model snake species in natural ecosystems by ecological parameters and molecular markers; determination of toxic effects of cadmium on glial cells in culture, evaluation of molecular biomarkers of the disturbance of the cell structural components under the influence of heavy metal ions intoxication. Research methods and equipment: field ecological methods, cell culture methods, biochemical and molecular methods for biomarkers determination. Theoretical and practical results: Low doses of Cd induce dose-dependent growth of reactive oxygen species, inhibition of the expression of the cytoskeletal marker of astrocytes – glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAB) and the metabolic marker of glucose utilization – glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). The relationship between the generation of oxidative damage of macromolecules and the initiation of apoptosis under conditions of low doses of CdCl2 has been proven. Industrial pollution of ecosystems causes oxidative stress and triggers astrogliosis in the brain of dice snakes. Novelty: the cytotoxic effect of low doses of Cd in the astrocytic cell model U373GM was determined; connection of astroglial cytotoxicity of Cd with oxidative damages, suppression of glial intermediate filaments expression and disorder of utilization of glucose. The cytotoxicity of cadmium in U251 glioma cells was assessed by markers of oxidative stress and apoptosis. New characteristics of molecular markers of model animals and cell cultures were obtained; their validity in relation to the indication of toxic effects of heavy metals was evaluated.
