The systematization and description of the main biotopes and groups of transitional waters of the lower Danube have been carried out. The concept of zonal structure of groups (hydrobiocenoses) is confirmed; it is shown that the structure of their different parts (central and marginal) may differ in the magnitude of species richness and products. Marginal areas form a transition zone between different groups and may have higher species richness. It is established that a sharp change or extreme action of abiotic factors contributes to the formation of ecological tension zone, which is characterized by poor species composition and lack of stable biotic groups. It is shown that the phenomenon of marginal effect (increase of species richness) is present in the interaction of groups. Its emergence is facilitated by the formation of permanent habitats in transition zones with specific species that are absent in the contact groups. The concept of biodiversity formation, functioning and interaction of hydrobiocenoses shows that the mechanisms of these processes in the delta are provided by multicomponent unique natural biome, hierarchy of its biotic systems, saturation of different habitats and groups and diversity of transitional zones between them.
