Based on the application of methods of codicology, paleography, archeography, a textual analysis of the Galician-Volhynian chronicle was carried out. Its place in the history of old Ruthenian historiography was determined. An important achievement was the definition of the literary works that served as sources of borrowings into the chronicle, the analysis of their impact on the language of the text. For the first time in scholarship, a new vision of the history of the formation of this key text has been proposed, based on the consistent application of textual methods. The division of the text of the chronicle into two main parts, which received the conditional names "Galician" and "Volhynian", has been confirmed. It is established that the "Galician" part arises after 1264 on the basis of acquaintance with the translated chronographic literature and under the influence of these works. Chronicle writing in Volhynia appeared after 1264 under the influence of translated chronographic texts. In the late 1280s, this first historical work was continued in the form of a "Volhynian" chronicle. After 1292, the Volhynian chronicle was edited and the "Galician" part was systematically revised, which finally gave the GVL the form in which it is part of the Hypatian Codex. On the basis of frontal source and textual analysis of the text of the Galician-Volhynian chronicle it was possible to outline on a qualitatively new level the historical and informative potential of many GVL reports, which still determined the view of scholars on the history of Ukraine and the Galician-Volhynian region in the 13th century.
