The purpose of the work is to assess the ecological condition of representative water bodies of Ukraine and the level of their anthropogenic load for the development of effective and reliable water treatment technologies aimed at eliminating and preventing their pollution. Research methods - analysis and systematization of scientific-theoretical and practical data on quantitative and qualitative aspects of water use in the basins of selected water bodies; methods of calculation of ecological standards of water quality, integrated indices of water pollution, indices of hydroecological potential of natural-technogenic hydroecosystems. A modern ecological assessment of water quality in representative areas of water bodies of the Dnieper and Dniester basins has been performed. Ecological standardization of water quality was carried out and its conformity to the modern ecological condition was established. The level of technogenic load and its main factors are estimated. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of hydroecological potential of natural-technogenic hydroecosystems in the context of seasons and periods of different water content are estimated. Proposals for water protection measures are substantiated. The strategy of choosing the best technology for neutralization of specific toxic and biologically stable sewage pollution is proposed, on the basis of which a number of effective technological solutions aimed at preserving the ecological well-being of water resources of Ukraine have been created. The obtained results were used to prepare materials for consideration at the meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on "Challenges and threats to the national security of Ukraine in the environmental sphere and priority measures to neutralize them”.
