In terms of their structure, these coatings are solid, but studies in recent years have found that in many respects they are inferior to the coating of a discrete structure. The formation of regular areas on the surfaces, in particular parts of tribotechnical systems leads to a decrease in the coefficient of friction and the amount of wear and provides an increase in wear resistance from 2 to 5 times compared to traditional solid coatings of equal thickness. The object of research is the processes of surface modification of metals and alloys. The subject of research is surface strengthening of parts of tribotechnical systems of military and dual purpose, and also details and knots of tillage equipment, by formation of multipurpose coverings of discrete structure by means of vacuum-diffusion gas-discharge technologies. At different times, the PNFC team researched and implemented such technologies as ionic nitriding, nitrooxidation, nitrogardening, carbon nitriding, and in different variants - in the glow discharge of both DC and pulse power, with dependent and autonomous parameters, in nonstationary fields. The latest developments of the authors are related to the study of the effect of a hollow cathode, which can be used to intensify the vacuum-diffusion gas-discharge processes, as well as to implement technologies for local surface modification. Another area of research is related to the formation of complex coatings. The results of previous experiments indicate a significant increase in the performance of the obtained coatings.
