Semenenko Institute of geochemistry, mineralogy and ore formation popup.description2 Within Ukrainian Shield (USh) several geological and industrial types of deposits are distinguished, containing Nb and Ta as major or minor elements. Carbonatitic deposits are the most promising for the extraction of these elements and the continuation of prospecting works. In the last, Nb and Ta, as well as U, despite their moderate content, can be extracted along the way with other minerals. Apophenitic albitites of the Chernigivka massif and other occurrences of the Azov region can also be considered as ore-bearing inasmuch as they are also contain rich Nb mineralization. There are great prospects for new findings of carbonatites in connection with the identification of numerous points of alkaline metasomatites in the Eastern Azov region. Now only one deposit and several promising occurrences of rare-metal ores are related with nepheline syenites in the Azov region while all of them have low Nb content. Main factors determining the ore-potential of alkaline and nepheline syenites are the conditions of the primary magmatic melt generation, initial magma volumes and the intensity of melt differentiation. An important factor that influenced on the ore content of rare metals in the massifs of alkaline and nepheline syenites is the tectonic conditions of the origin of primary melts. So generation of alkaline melts under compression settings (subduction, collision), predicted for alkaline rocks of northwestern part of the USh, did not contribute to accumulation of incoherent elements even in the most differentiated melts. Under rifting conditions, typical for eastern part of the Azov region in Paleoproterozoic and Devonian, initial melts were significantly enriched in rare metals even at the early stages. Although the mineralization of Nb has been revealed in the rare-metal and alkaline granites of the USh, it does not have big significance and in and in the future can be extracted only by the integrated mining of such rocks for other elements (Sn, W, Be, Y, REE).
