VI Vernadsky National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 As a result of the project implementation it was found for the first time that: – the degree of direct electrochemical reduction of zirconium dioxide in molten mixtures based on calcium chloride and calcium oxide is depends on the cationic composition and the higher, the lower their total acid strength. – the use of liquid electrodes provides more favorable conditions for electrochemical reduction of refractory metal oxides in comparison with solid-phase processes, respectively, and a higher degree of metal extraction and a significant reduction in specific electricity consumption. – molten electrolytes based on magnesium chloride in comparison with melts based on calcium compounds allow to obtain fine zirconium powder at lower current densities and temperatures, but with a slightly lower degree of extraction (5-10%). – in the ternary system CaCl2–NaCl–CaO there are wide areas of compositions with a high content of both sodium and calcium chlorides (not less than 40 mol.%) and calcium oxide (not less than 4 mol.%), in which it remains in molten state at temperatures above 500 °C. – method of direct electrochemical reduction of mixtures of individual oxides of refractory metals in molten oxide-salt electrolytes allows to obtain not only individual metals but also alloys based on them, for example, ferrotitanium alloys with a titanium content of from 46.1 to 77.4 wt.% The obtained results form the basis for a reasonable choice of conditions for electrochemical extraction of refractory metals to ensure the highest possible degree of extraction of the target product.
