The complex analysis of scientific collections has proven the significance of such collections for the analysis of former states of fauna and for creation of reconstructed checklists of a region’s biota, as well as to study the geographic range of key species. The obtained results can be used in fundamental studies by research institutions of Ukraine and the world. Based on the analysis of collection species, the research history of ground squirrels as pets is described in detail along with the reconstruction of the history and scientific activity of zoological institutions of Kyiv in 1940 to 1944. The spatiotemporal taxonomic and morphological analysis of museum specimens of model mammalian species (of the genera Sylvaemus, Spalax, Sicista, Myotis, etc.) from the territory of Ukraine was carried out and the variation of external characters was described. Regional diagnostic keys were developed and their high effectiveness during work with collection materials was shown. The study into the history of formation of collections of naturalia revealed their key role in the development of natural history knowledge. A new periodization of the European museology has been proposed in the context of the history of natural history museology. Interactive educational programmes, which have been developed and launched as popular science activities, have been implemented in the National Museum of Natural History NAS of Ukraine allowing to address the issue of information devaluation, which is common for traditional forms of activities with target social groups in museums of both natural history and cultural heritage.
