The purpose of the work is to describe the development of the word-forming structure of pluralia tantum nouns from the Proto-Slavic period to the present. It is established that the nouns pluralia tantum functioned in the pre-writing period, their word-forming structure is analyzed. The dynamics of lexical and word-forming types of plural nouns in the Ukrainian language of the written period at all stages of its functioning is revealed: Old Russian (XI–XIII centuries), Old Ukrainian (XIV–XV–XVIII centuries) and the new Ukrainian language. The activity of old and new word-forming types and subtypes is described, the reasons for expanding the word-forming base of pluratives, involving new forms in their creation are clarified. Particular attention is dedicated to education with confixal forms. It is stated that the constant development of the original and organic derivational subsystem of pluralia tantum nouns was intensified both by the pressure of the system on the ordering of its elements and by the internal laws of language development. For the first time in Ukrainian linguistics, a significant fragment of the history of the word-forming system of the Ukrainian noun has been studied, which, together with other historical studies of this kind, will make it possible to identify the driving forces of word formation. The results of the research are introduced into the educational process of the Department of Ukrainian Language of Zaporоzhya National University, in particular in the teaching of disciplines "Historical Grammar of the Ukrainian Language", "Modern Ukrainian Language (Morphology)", "Modern Ukrainian Language (Morphemics and Word Formation)".
