Strategic importance of mineral raw materials, mineral resource policy of the leading industrial countries of the world, methods for assessing the criticality of mineral raw materials are considered. A model for assessing the strategic importance of types of minerals has been developed. The criterias for the allocation of a group of strategic mineral resources of Ukraine include the therrmodynamic rarity, the degree of concentration of reserves of raw materials and production of products among countries and mining companies, the criticality of types of raw materials for the EU countries and the world, the need for raw materials for the development of new and promising technologies, the volume and price of identified reserves in Ukraine, the level of extraction of raw materials to provide domestic needs, export potential, socio-political conditions for the mining of raw materials, the environmental consequences of mining. As a result of the research, thе list of strategic mineral resources of Ukraine, which includes 14 types of minerals,was formed and substantiated: zirconium, uranium, iron, hafnium, germanium, titanium, vanadium, gallium, lithium, cobalt, manganese, graphite, rare earths, scandium.
