The purpose of the work is the scientific analysis and understanding of narratives about the Chernobyl disaster as a phenomenon of oral history and folk literature. The methodological principles of the work are the tested methods of folklore and oral history, aimed at ensuring the maximum authenticity and reliability of fixation. In this sense, not only the methods of interviewing are extremely important, but also the recordings in a natural communicative context, casual and spontaneous, as well as adherence to the principles of continuous fixation in the process of working with respondents. It is also important to assurance the anonymity of the collected materials during their further publication and adherence to the ethics of field work with narrators with painful experience. Analytical review and scientific analysis of the collected materials was carried out on a thematic basis. The scientific novelty of the study is to fill the archive with a significant amount of new empirical material that reflects the understanding of the Chernobyl disaster through the prism of perception of the average person, in whose mind there is a fusion of traditional ideas and assessments and individual psychological and empirical experience. This is a guarantee that the research and its conclusions will be important and useful for researchers of history, folklore, cultural anthropology, sociology, psychology. This work is the first attempt to analyze and comprehend the narratives of the Chernobyl disaster on the border of two approaches: cultural anthropology and the method of oral history.
