Kukhar Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  A number of acidic and bifunctional zeolite catalysts based on natural zeolites of Transcarpathia and synthetic zeolites such as mordenite and faujasite have been synthesized. Calcium, lanthanum and ammonium cations were introduced into the catalysts by ion exchange, as well as nickel and tin were introduced by impregnation. The samples were modified by using steaming at 200 and 250 oC in a stream of superheated water vapor, as well as dealumination with hydrochloric acid and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The acidity of the synthesized samples was studied by means of pyridine sorption and the textural characteristics of the samples were determined by using low-temperature adsorption/desorption of nitrogen. The dependence of the porous characteristics of catalysts on acid treatment and on the conditions of heat treatment is established. It was found that the treatment of samples in a stream of water vapor at 250 oC increases the mesoporosity of the samples almost without changing the BET specific surface area, and dealumination with EDTA and hydrochloric acid contributed to the increase of the specific surface area. Hydrochloric acid contributes to the improvement of only microporosity and EDTA causes an increase in both the microporosity of the samples and mesoporosity. The transformation of simple carbohydrates (glucose and fructose) in the presence of synthesized samples into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural at 160 oC was studied. Natural based samples showed a yield of hydroxymethylfurfural up to 20% in the conversion of glucose, while in the case of fructose yields reached up to 50 and 83% on steam-modified and EDTA-modified samples at high conversions.
