The taxonomic composition and spatial distribution of decapod crabs within the Central and Eastern Paratethys were revealed, the specifics of their habitats were reconstructed and the features of their taphonomy in fishbeds were clarified. The existence of five shark taxa in the eastern part of the Carpathian Basin (Notorynchus primigenius, Heptran¬chias cf. H. tenuidens, Echinorhinus sp., Isurolamna gracilis and Alopias cf. A. superciliosus) during the Oligocene was revealed. Remains of Isurolamna gracilis and Echinorhinus sp. were first described from the Oligocene of Ukraine, whereas records of Notorynchus primi¬genius were first reported from the territory of the Carpathian Basin. The functional role of sharks in Oligocene ecosystems was clarified. Using methods of complex morphological analysis, a sample of gill rakers of basking sharks was identified as Keasius parvus. The role of gill raker morphology in the taxonomy of Cetorhinidae was clarified. Early Miocene remains of fishes of the family Leiognathidae were revealed to be morphologically identical to Leiognathoides minutus from the Caucasian Basin. The Western Tethys was established to be a potential centre of origin of ponyfishes. The hypothesis of possible faunal exchange between various basins of the Paratethys during the Early Miocene was confirmed.
