Registration Date 17-12-2021 Organization Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine popup.description2 Using iPBS-PCR analysis, we studied 139 DNA samples from 16 populations of Antarctic pearl C. quitensis (Kunth) Bartl. from several regions of central and northern maritime Antarctic and South America. An analysis of the genetic variation in C. quitensis plants from the study area was carried out based on the data of PCR-analysis. It was shown that the studied populations in each of the regions differ significantly in the level of genetic diversity, whith the southernmost populations having on average the lowest genetic diversity. The results of the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated moderate differentiation of populations and a fairly high level of intrapopulation variability (46% of total genetic heterogeneity). Two C. quitensis genetic variants, the ‘northern’ and ‘southern’ ones, was found to be distributed in the central and northern maritime Antarctic, from the South Shetland Islands to Margarita Bay; and the boundary between their ranges passes across the Argentine Islands region, where some islands are inhabited by one variant and others by another.
