The effect of cation exchange between Ce3+ ions in inactivated cerium oxide nanocrystals and Eu3+/Tb3+ ions has been revealed. It was found that the ability to cation exchange depends on the degree of oxidation of cerium ions on the surface of nanocrystals and this process can be controlled by UV irradiation and the addition of oxidants. It has been shown that orthovanadate NPs have the ability to generate superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solutions in so-called dark conditions after pre-irradiation with UV light. It is shown that the "dark" redox activity of orthovanadates can be influenced by varying the size and degree of defect of nanocrystals and the introduction of impurity ions europium.
