However, the mechanisms and driver forces of these reactions are still unclear, and existing models cannot explain all available field data. We studied tribochemical processes on the surface of ice particles in the laboratory using a low-temperature reactor with intensive stirring. It has been firstly shown that control of factors that stimulate the electrification of ice gives the possibility to influence the initiation and the direction of the chemical reaction on the snow surface. It has been shown that in the presence of ice, the reaction of toluene bromination follows a free radical path with the formation of benzyl bromide. In the absence of ice, the reaction goes by "traditional" way with bromination of the benzoic ring. Stirring of the ice and an electric field application increases the reaction yield.
