It was found that the preliminary oxidation of SnSO4 powder with concentrated H2SO4 before the hydrolysis stage makes it possible to obtain SnO2 powder with an average particle size of 5.5 nm and a high surface area (70.4 m2 / g) after calcination at 600 ° C. Gas-sensitive composites SnO2-Au with Au sizes from 1.9 ± 0.1 to 3.5 ± 0.5 nm were prepared using various methods for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. An increase in the sensor response to CO, CH4, and C2H5OH was observed when gold nanoparticles 1.9–3.5 nm in size were added to the SnO2⋅nH2O sol. The highest reaction o acetone was recorded by the SnO2-Au sensor (3.5 nm). It was found that the introduction of gold nanoparticles increases the sensitivity of sensors based on SnO2 to acetone. SnO2 sensors (0.2 wt% Au) have the highest threshold sensitivity to acetone vapor in air.
