This led to a sharp rise in Jewish enrollment. On the one hand it increased the possibility of contacts with non-Jewish students, but on the other, it made it possible to socialize predominantly within Jewish circles.This project will examine the earlier period, when no tradition of Jewish students culture was avaliable and Ukrainiand, Russian students culture was in its early stages of formation. Although Osip Rabinovich and Nikolai Scherbina are clearly two of the protagonists of our study, the broader context of the contacts between students of different ethnic and religious origin will be examined, with special emphasis on Jewish-Ukrainian contacts.
