The founding of Borysthenes (a settlement on the island of Berezan), as well as Olbia, became a key event in the history of this region. Ceramic products provided not only the life of the settlers, but also were as a commodity, which, through these centres, imported to the barbaric population of the Forest-Steppe zone. Nevertheless, no convincing evidence of the existence of local pottery has been found in Olbia, but archaeological evidence suggests that it undoubtedly took place at Classical, Hellenistic and Roman times. In the absence of archaeologically recorded pottery kilns, we pay special attention not only to mass finds, but also to the resource potential of Olbia in ancient times. Mineral deposits were bound to provide pottery as a leading branch of the Hellenic economy. Moreover, the choice of the place of establishment of the polis had to be connected to this factor. Currently, we have a situation in which the creation of an economic model of the polis is impossible, because there is an information lacunae associated with the basic criterion for evaluating the raw material application of the polis as a guarantee of its full-fledged development. Ancient settlement on the island of Berezan (Borysthenes) is traditionally considered in the same system with the Olbia polis in cultural and economic terms. Recently opened here firing pottery kilns of the VI century BC once again brought up the issue of production of local ceramics. Therefore, it is extremely necessary to determine the raw material base of pottery of ancient Borysthenes, which is important for understanding the development of its economy throughout its existence and clarifying interpoleis contacts by identifying a group of local ceramics.
