In particular, for all flora of Ukraine we digitized the functional traits of resource value (edible, medicinal, vitamin, decorative, essential oil, fodder, dye, poisonous), as well as life forms according to Raunkier and Serebryakov. For steppe species we measured such traits as seed weight and shape (264 samples, 193 species), leaf surface area and specific leaf surface area (254 samples, 178 species), nitrogen content in leaves (194 samples, 135 species). We studied the syntaxonomy of steppes for the Kamyanskaya Sich, Azov-Sivasky, Bug Gard, and the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve National Parks. And at the national level, we described the classification of all available geobotanical releves (7568) was carried out, and three new orders of the Festuco-Brometea (Galatello villosae-Stipetalia lessingianae, Cephalario uralensis-Jurineetalia stoechadifolii, Asphodelia pethoricaeurichae) class. On the basis of the developed syntaxonomic scheme, both for the territory of Ukraine and at the regional level the functional and phylogenetic diversity of the selected syntaxa is estimated. Based on them, we evaluated such ecosystem services of steppes as productivity, oxygen production, food source for herbivores, pollination, resource value, stability of groups, aesthetic value, consolidation of the topsoil, fixation of atmospheric nitrogen, nutrient cycle, biodiversity conservation. It is proved that the indicators of functional and phylogenetic diversity calculated for syntaxa of steppe vegetation may be used to assess ecosystem services of the main types of steppes of Ukraine, both at the national level and locally for individual territories and natural objects.
