The scope of the study includes the following aspects of the history of the Holocaust: its regional features, local popular participation in it, the investigation of Nazi crimes, as well as literary images of the Shoah. The objective is to examine the historiography and primary sources of Holocaust history and its cultural memory and to obtain new scientific data regarding the regional features of the Holocaust in Ukraine, the non-Jewish population’s attitudes toward and behavior during the genocide, the Nazi crimes investigation, and the reflections of twentieth-century fiction writers and readers on the Jewish catastrophe. The methods of research involve critical analysis of primary sources, historical genetic method, historical comparison, and time series method. In addition, oral history methods were used both to collect relevant information and to interpret it. The microhistorical approach was applied to trace life circumstances of specific individuals and the conditions they had been living through. The research outcomes and their novelty: The research includes a comprehensive analysis of the Holocaust historiography and systematizes key historical and interdisciplinary works that revealed significant aspects of this genocide’s study. In particular, it traces the stages of development of the world and Ukrainian historiography of the subject; clarifies the points of various historiographical schools; characterizes the studies that focus on the fate of Nazi regime’s non-Jewish victims; sistematizes important methodological works that offer new optics in Holocaust studies; and examines the contributions of Ukrainian scholars of the Shoah.
