The model considers the environmental impact of a hypothetical deep geological repository of vitrified high-level radioactive waste from WWER reactors constructed in crystalline rocks of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and the adjacent regions. The calculated maximum migration rates are (Bq/year): for 137Cs – 9.12E + 06; 90Sr – 3.83E + 07; 241Am – 6.40E + 07; 239Pu – 2.88E + 06, and the mortality risk per year is 4.02E-09, which is significantly lower than the target value – 5E-07/year. Synthesized composite sorbents with an active phase of manganese dioxide are characterized by increased selectivity for strontium radionuclides. The inorganic phase structure influence on the adsorption parameters of the sorbents has been studied. The birnessite-type composite sorbent (MnO2 layered structure) has high adsorption capacity and adsorption stability in sorption-desorption cycles. The cryptomelane-type composite sorbent (MnO2 tunnel structure) demonstrates irreversible fixation of strontium ions.
