The structures under consideration are modeled by flat elastic waveguides and studied under the conditions of their harmonic excitation. The defects are specified by the surfaces on which the different types of boundary conditions are satisfied. The ideal boundary conditions are considered for describing formed defects such as rigid inclusions and cracks, and impedance-type boundary conditions are used for assessing the degree of damage to plane-layered structures. Based on the solution of the diffraction problems, the physical features of the scattered fields are analyzed. The effects of the transformation of modes at the tops of the defects for various types of damages are studied for different geometrical parameters of the scattering structure and the probing frequency. The identification signs of defects are determined using the peculiarities of the distribution of the displacement field on the surfaces free from the load.
