Protecting polymeric coatings based on commercial epoxy resin DER 331containing 10-20 weight percent of cationic biocides, have been prepared. Modification of epoxy coatings with onium salts was found to cause enhancement of hydrophobic properties of their surface. According to the results of spectrophotometric studies, cationic biocide 1-dodecylpyridinium dodecylbenzenesulfonate has the highest resistance to release into water (less than 1% after 60 days). The results of thermophysical studies indicate a plasticizing effect of onium salts on epoxy resin, which is manifested in a decrease of the glass transition temperature of modified coatings by more than 30 °C compared to control samples. It has been found that the epoxy coating modified with the cationic biocide 1-dodecylpyridinium dodecylbenzenesulfonate effectively inhibits the formation of bacterial biofilms (E. coli and S. aureus) on the surface. The results of field tests in fresh water (Dnieper river) indicate the antifouling properties of epoxy coatings, which contain 20% of 1-dodecylpyridinium dodecylbenzenesulfonate.
