Along with the search for new species that have medicinal properties, the breeding of more productive varieties, the redirection of the metabolism of organisms in the direction of increasing the substances necessary for practice. While genetic and metabolic engineering focuses on the genetic transformation of organisms to address this issue, experience with the study of protective responses to stress suggests the possibility of using epigenetic mechanisms to reorient metabolism. One of the effective approaches is the use of ionizing and UV-C exposure. The response to radiation exposure covers the processes of growth and development, the various blocks of primary and secondary metabolism, significantly changing their dynamic characteristics. Therefore, the development of technology to increase medicinal raw materials and medicinal compounds by different types of radiation should include: i) selection of varieties with high and stable productivity of medicinal raw materials; ii) selection of the type of irradiation and evaluation of dose dependences; identification of optimal doses that at least do not reduce the yield of medicinal raw materials and at the same time induce an increase in the yield of the target metabolite; iii) assessment of the coincidence in time of the indicators of the yield of pharmaceutical raw materials, the specific content of the required metabolite and the total effect of irradiation. Based on the above, the aim of the work is to develop a scientific basis for biotechnology to stimulate the formation of medicinal raw materials and low molecular weight antioxidants in medicinal plants by pre-sowing UV-C exposure of seeds.
