The emission and temporal characteristics of a low-temperature plasma obtained in the helium-selenium and argon-selenium mixtures are investigated for the first time. A numerical modeling of basic physical-chemical processes for the high pressure barrier discharge in the argon-sulfur mixture is performed using the kinetic 1-D model. It is shown that the optimal Se2 part in the Ar–Se mixture to create a barrier discharge source based on the radiation of molecules Se2* is about 0.5%. With a content of Se2 equal to 0.5% in the Ar–Se mixture about 98% of the barrier disharge luminescence is distributed between Ar* (44 %), Se2* (42 %), and Ar2* (12 %). It is established that the main mechanism of the excited selenium molecules formation is the energy transmission from metastable inert gas atoms to Se2* dimers.
