However, the main disadvantage of zinc oxide is that this semiconductor material is able to effectively absorb light only in the ultraviolet region of the sun spectrum, which significantly narrows its use for photocatalysis. The proposed research program provides for targeted modification of zinc oxide by doping with an isovalent impurity of cadmium and the creation of solid solutions of Zn1 xCdxO to increase the photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO. The incorporation of cadmium into the ZnO lattice, depending on the concentration, can shift the absorption edge to the visible region of the spectrum or cause the generation of bound excitons. Achieving a rational balance between cadmium content, ZnO matrix stability and optical properties is a key factor in creating effective materials with the required photocatalytic activity. Within the framework of this project complex experimental researches in the direction of optimization of technological conditions of films and nanostructures growth of the ZnO-Cd system by methods of magnetron sputtering and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition are proposed. A combination of structure analysis methods (X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy) and optical properties (photoluminescence, optical spectroscopy) will be used to characterize the obtained materials at all stages of the project and will provide the necessary feedback to optimize the synthesis process. At the final stage of the project, with the help of model organic dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange) the photocatalytic properties of films and nanostructures of the ZnO-Cd system with developed morphology will be studied. Samples with the best dye degradation efficiency will be used for control studies in real conditions for water purification with unknown organic contaminants.
