The methodological basis of the study are: the provisions of scientific theory of knowledge on the interaction and interdependence of objective reality, the unity of general and special, theory and practice, as well as general philosophical ideas of humanistic understanding of man as the absolute value and purpose of social progress, principles of continuity, goal setting , individualization of training; general methodological, andragogical, personal-developmental and active approaches in the educational process; conceptual provisions of pedagogy and psychology on the role of lifelong learning; provisions on the personal development of the elderly. Results of scientific research: in the process of scientific research the conceptual and terminological apparatus of research is analyzed; the analysis of normative-legal maintenance of education of people of the third age is carried out; the organizational and pedagogical bases of activity of universities of the third age are substantiated; developed educational and methodological support for the training of the elderly; an experimental study was conducted, the effectiveness was tested and its results were summarized; prognostic recommendations for the development of adult education in Ukraine are substantiated.
