It was proposed to take into account the difference in goals, values and essence of investigation for teachers, researchers, developers and entrepreneurs as for their absorptive capacity for cognitive material. It has been confirmed that modern cognition is scientific in the "broad sense" and goes beyond "strict science". It requires clarification of norms and criteria for individual cognition subsystems. The main original result of the work is to identify and describe the modern phenomenon of university science, which consists in the presence in these institutions of subsystems of knowledge with different goals, values and results: research of teachers to form pedagogical knowledge of courses surpass the world's achievements, as well as applied developments focused on obtaining useful results for social practices and innovative entrepreneurship. The working hypothesis about the phenomenon of university science is partially confirmed empirically by analyzing the content and citations in the publications of domestic experts. It is shown that the legislation of Ukraine in the field of higher education does not take into account the modern spectrum of knowledge in universities, and therefore does not provide targeted support for research of different types, taking into account their features.
