The diffusion method for doping magnesium-aluminum spinel crystals with cobalt ions was developed and saturable absorber for passive Q-switch operation (1.54 μm wavelength) were obtained, which demonstrated stable pulse generation with a frequency of 1 Hz and an energy of 0.3-0.35 mJ and a duration within 13 -17 ns. The fundamental possibility of using carbon-containing gaseous media and molybdenum crucibles (iridium-free technology) for the growing of Y3Al5O12:Nd, Er, Yb laser crystals has been demonstrated.
