There are several main directions of this general task. The first is the study of photorefractive processes. In nonlinear, particularly photorefractive media, light-induced one-dimensional periodic structures, or more complex two-dimensional or three-dimensional structures are observed with irradiation by a single plane wave as a result of instabilities of a certain type, or when irradiated with two or more waves. The subjects of the performed research are periodic structures of both types, but mainly that are created in a controlled way by two coherent waves. The use of diffraction and self-diffraction effects makes possible to obtain the material characteristics of the studied samples. The second area of research is singular optics, as a new branch of physical optics, which was initiated by the pioneering work of the Department and further developed in 2017-21, in particular as a combination of polarization singular optics with polarization holography to create optical elements capable of converting of laser beams in the desired "singular" beams with high efficiency. Much of the work was devoted to the study of the structure and luminescent properties of the photonic crystal of synthetic opal. This metamaterial demonstrates both interesting linear and nonlinear optical effects. The reasons influencing the broadening and deformation of the form of the band gap due to structural defects have been identified. The effect of long afterglow of a sample of synthetic opal at the temperature of liquid nitrogen was investigated. For the first time, the effect of switching the maximum of the luminescence spectrum in the region around the band gap was observed.
