The subject of research - the basic, general, and special patterns of formation and development of the state and law of Ukraine in the XX - first quarter of the XXI century. The purpose of the research is to study the main trends and patterns of functioning of the Ukrainian state and its legal system in the XX - first quarter of the XXI century. This goal led to several research tasks: to highlight the features of the formation of the legislation of Ukraine in this period; to analyze the process of military construction at different stages of the development of Ukrainian state (during the periods of UCC, Hetmanate, Directory, WUPR, USSR / USSR, independent Ukraine); to reveal the peculiarities of the struggle of the subjects of the Ukrainian liberation movement of the 40s - mid-50s of the XX century, to explore the spatial aspects of law and the state of modern Ukraine; to outline the peculiarities of the development of European integration and Ukraine's participation in it. Research methods - method of historicism (chronology), axiological method, comparative legal method, analysis and synthesis, the system method, induction, and deduction. The scientific novelty lies in the attempt to scientific problems of state and law-making processes in the context of the national liberation movement (at different stages with different methods and forms of struggle) in the XX - first quarter of the XXI century; taking into account the lessons of state-building, positive experience, the causes of defeats, and their use to reform Ukraine in the face of aggression by the Russian Federation. The practical value of the research - the obtained results are important for modern transformation processes in Ukraine, as they prevent the recurrence of mistakes and shortcomings and are an important guide in the development of the Ukrainian state.
