The source base of this research consists of versatile primary sources including newly generated empirical data, that were properly verified and systematized. A thorough critical review of major works by Ukrainian and foreign scholars allowed to develop a strong theoretical and methodological framework and to choose relevant analytical tools for this research to explore four major themes: migration processes, gendered historical experiences, Soviet everyday life, and historical memory. Newest theoretical models were tested on the Ukrainian sources to reveal their heuristic potential. The research team meaningfully conceptualized the key research categories to explore various socio-cultural processes. A complex multi-layer analysis of the impact of specific historical contexts (wars, national liberation movement, Holodomor, political repressions, collectivization, modernization, Sovietization, multiethnic milieu, transitional economy, transnational migration, decolonization etc.) on the transformation of social identities, collective believes and value systems, as well as daily practices of certain social groups (ethnic minorities, women, migrants, teachers, refugees, peasants etc.) during the long 20th century allowed to show multiplicity of experiences and dynamic nature of identities. Theoretical significance of this research consists in elaboration and validation of original theoretical models against particular Ukrainian empirical materials.
