The aim is to study in landscape compositions biological and ecological bases of woody and shrub plants viability and decorativeness, to analyze its assortment, peculiarities of their functioning, changes in assimilation organs morphostructure, water-exchange processes and state of pigment complex to ecological factors action during growth in different compositions types. Different functional purpose plantations are described from 175 natural dendrocompositions, including traditional and alternative landscaping forms. Its assortment includes 209 plants taxons from 36 families, 61 genera, presents by 80 species, 129 cultivars. In the age structure of natural compositions is dominated by specimens aged 31–40 years (40%), among shrubs - up to 20 years (35%). 80% of plants in compositions have a high living condition. Was a detected adaptive change in annual shoot histological elements of Betula pendula, Crataegus submollis, Pinus pallasiana, which help protect internal tissues from contaminants penetration. Establish changes in the pigments content in birch leaves during the growing season is one of reactions aimed at protecting substances and structures leaf tissue in growth under stress. A study of water-exchange processes physiology of B. pendula and C. submollis found that the redistribution of water fractions is manifested in conditions of industrial emissions pollution, which contributes to maintaining high water content of plants under stress. The scientific bases of durable plantations creation in the steppe zone of Ukraine are substantiated. Recommendations for the use of woody and shrubby plants in urban plantations for various purposes in industrial cities steppe zone of Ukraine have been developed.
