It is established that the indicators of primary productivity of moss communities depend on the degree of turfs hydration, the interaction of moss species with different types of life forms and water absorption systems. It is noted that Polytrichaceae can be exohydric in localities with temperate moisture, but are mainly endohydric in arid conditions, which increases the intensity of transpiration flow. Hydrolysis of starch and accumulation of soluble sugars, primarily sucrose, increase the water holding capacity of bryophyte cells and increase the fraction of bound water in the overall plants water balance. For dominant moss species adaptation to changing edaphic and climatic conditions is provided by changes in polyphenol oxidase activity and the content of total water-soluble phenols.
