S. Berezhnoy" popup.description2  The research object is low-cement silicon carbide castable. The work purpose is investigation of special properties of castable samples from low-cement silicon carbide castable. The research methods are physical-mechanical, chemical and thermo-physical ones. Additional studies of physical, mechanical and service properties of castable samples from low-cement silicon carbide castable mix of “NKBS” grade were carried out. According to physical and chemical properties, the indicated samples were characterized by the following properties: content (wt. %): SiC — 79.7 %, Al2O3 — 11.3 %, CaO — 1.35 %; cold crushing strength after 7 days of hardening and drying at a temperature of 110 оС (2 hour) — 42.2 N/mm2; cold crushing strength after firing at a temperature of 1000 оС — 67.5 N/mm2. It was found that, the thermal conductivity of a castable sample, heat-treated at a temperature of 1000 ℃, was 8.2 W/(m • K), and thermal shock resistance (950 оС — water) more than 20 heat changes. By studies of alkali resistance of the samples from silicon carbide castable, heat-treated at temperatures of 110 оС and 1000 оС in comparison with the sample of fireclay composition, it was revealed that, the castable samples, heat-treated at 1000 оС, were characterized by greater alkali resistance compared to this characteristic of the same composition samples, but heat-treated at temperature 110 оС. At the same time a reduction of strength and density of samples structure does not occur, as evidenced by the indicators of cold crushing strength and density of the samples before and after testing for alkali. The pilot batches of silicon carbide products with indicators of properties that meet the requirements of Technical Specifications were made. Manufactured refractory products were supplied to the consumer on domestic market.
