The object of research – novels City of God by Edgar L. Doctorow (2000), and Paper Cities by J. Green(2008). The purpose of the third stage is to identify the semantic specifics and individual authorial features of the functioning of the child's literary archetype in the novels City of God by Edgar L. Doctorow and Paper Cities by J. Green. Research methods are comparative-historical, elements of holistic analysis, mythopoetic, hermeneutic, as well as the technique of “close reading”. It is proved that since the beginning of the XXI century the archetype of the child is significantly problematized. The originality of the image of the American teenager is determined and the archetype of the path influences the formation of personality, and the archetype of the road as the real path of the character in the novel Paper Cities by J. Green is considered. The main tendencies of the second half of the XX – the beginning of the XXI centuries of filling the archetype of the child with actual historical characteristics are traced. The novel City of God Edgar L. Doctorow embodies the idea of the existential tragedy of being as a traumatic but necessary reminder of the ethical imperfection of humanity at the level of the child’s archetype. Also, the archetype of the child includes a biblical component, which gives it symbolic significance in the literary paradigm of the early XXI century.
